Family Travel Safety Tips Last updated 2/18/2008
Before you leave
Preventing crime during family travel starts with making sure your home is protected while you're away. The key is to make it look like you never left:

  • Keep shades and blinds in their normal positions.

  • Stop mail and newspapers, or ask a neighbor to pick them up every day.

  • Put several household lights on timers so they turn on and off at appropriate times.

  • Arrange to have grass mowed (or snow shoveled) while you're gone.

  • Make sure all your door and window locks are in working order - and use them.

  • You might even leave a radio on - or put it on a timer.

  • Make sure the outside of your house is lit up. (This should be a daily practice - criminals don't like the light)

  • Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway overnight - anything that might suggest someone's home.

  • If you have close neighbors, ask them to check your house a couple times a day as an additional check.

  • And don't forget to lock all doors and windows when you leave.

  • Activate your home alarm (if you have one).

  • Contact the St. Bernard Police Department at 242-2727 so we can add you to our Vacation House Check Program. You can now do this online. Go to our Vacation House Check link and just fill in the blanks and email the information to us. We will confirm that we have received your email and will check your house while you are gone. Please provide us with emergency contacts, who should be on your property, and what vehicles and lights will be on. Enjoy your vacation knowing that we are keeping an eye out for you while you are gone.

When you return

  • Contact the Police Department so that we can take your house off of the vacation house check list.
