How to get a copy of a Police Report  Last Updated 2/18/2008

Normally, it takes about three days to process a Police (Incident) Report. In other words, if an officer takes your report on Monday, it should be ready for you to get a copy on Thursday. Investigations that are more complex may take longer.

When people are involved in incidents such as a traffic crash, are victims of crime, or suffer property damage, very often they will need to obtain a copy of the police report. The copy of the report may be needed for insurance purposes, for legal purposes, or for proof that the incident was reported.

Whatever the reason, it is very simple to get a copy of a police report. The Department Clerk and Dispatcher at St. Bernard Police Department, work Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM except holidays. You can request a copy of a report from them in several ways: telephone them at 242-2727, send a letter, email us at mail@stbernardpolice.org, or just stop in the St. Bernard Police Department between those hours to pick up a copy of the report.

To process your request, the clerk will need some information: date, type of report, the name of at least one person involved in the report, name of the Officer taking the report, report number etc. The Clerks will then locate your report, and copy it for you.

We only charge what it costs us to reproduce the record in the medium requested. For instance, if the report is only a few printed pages there is normally not a fee. However, larger reports are 5 cents a page. If a photo or tape is requested we will charge whatever our costs are for those items.

How long does this process take?  For printed reports, the entire process, from the time you walk in the door, to the time you leave with your copy, unless things are busy will normally only take 10-15 minutes. However, if you are requesting a copy of a report older than 5 years, it will take longer. Records older than 5 years are kept in a record holding area. Other mediums: photos, recordings etc. will take longer to process. See Public Records page for further information.

If you have any questions please call us at 242-2727.
